5 questions with… alex blyth

Emerging pop artist Alex Blyth has been building momentum recently, with her music landing on BBC Radio 1’s Future Pop and gaining attention for its emotionally honest songwriting. Now based in London, the Reading-born, Adelaide-raised artist blends diary-like lyricism with anthemic pop melodies, creating songs that feel both deeply personal and widely relatable.

We caught up with Alex for a quick 5 Questions With… to talk song writing, influences and what she’s been listening to louder than usual lately.

what first made you want to start writing and releasing music?

Music has always been such an innate part of who I am, and as I grew up, writing and singing became my much-needed outlet. I’d always looked up to artists like Adele or Demi Lovato, and when I figured out that I could release music for a career, there was no changing my mind.

what does the songwriting process usually look like for you?

I’m super concept and melody driven! Often I’m starting with a tag line, or concept and forming melodies around it, then finding lyrics that fit into both. Lyrics have been something I’ve had to work a little harder at, but they’ve also become one of my favourite parts of the writing process.

your music often feels very personal and almost diary-like — how do you approach writing such honest songs?

It can be scary sometimes to write honest songs, but often I find the most cathartic ones to write are my favourite. Songs can be a physical record of my inner monologue and whether writing alone, or with others, finding a space that feels safe to create in is super important.

Sometimes I find it easier to start super personal songs alone, referring to real diary entries or free writing until I land on the core of an idea. Usually I’ll then bring it into a co-writing session to finish off.

what are you most excited about right now, musically or otherwise?

I’ve been trying to get a bit more into production, which has allowed me to experiment so much more with my sound and the way I put my songs together. It makes me super excited about the next era of music I’ve been working on, and even more excited to share with everyone when it’s ready.

what have you been listening to louder than usual lately?

I have been loving getting into a bunch of Lorde recently! Particularly Ribs, Team, Supercut and Clearblue. I feel like she really pushes her writing outside of the box, and I’ve been a bit obsessed!!
